Saint Elizabeth of Hungary
Saint Elizabeth Hospital, Enumclaw, Wa. VMFH

Saint Elizabeth of Hungary (B.1207-1231) was a young princess who had a heart for the poor. She would often sneak food from the castle kitchen, hide it in her cloak and carry it to the country’s lowlands where the poor resided. She was once caught with her secret stash of food and asked to pull back her cloak, only to reveal hundreds of flowers, known as The Miracle of the Roses. A twenty-year-old Elizabeth later received the return of her dowry upon the death of her husband and decided to build a hospital where the poor would come for healing.

Depicted in this bronze sculpture by Mardie Rees, Saint Elizabeth, embodies the hospital’s namesake as she descends carrying a basket of bread loaves for the hungry. A lively and tumbling cascade of roses bloom from her billowing cape; symbolizing her storied love for her community, witnessed in her founding of a hospital at the base of the mountain.

This piece is sculpted in honor of Sister Jude Connelly, OSF (May 8, 1940- March 28th, 2024) who faithfully served the Virginia Mason Franciscan Health System for over forty years.

Soul of the Forward and Faithful

WWII Marine Raider Memorial is on view at the Pentagon, U.S. Marine Corps Gen. Robert B. Neller
Collection of the National Museum of the Marine Corps, Triangle, Va.
commissioned by the WWII U.S. Marine Raider Foundation

"For the Soul of the elite force unit is its men. And if there is one thing the Raiders didn't lack, it was soul." -- Robert A. Buerlein from 'Our Kind of War'

The memorial presents a group of U.S. Marine Raiders tackling a sloped terrain in the jungles of the Pacific. At right, a Navajo code talker quickly relays information on forward operations before his radio signal is picked up by the Japanese. Ahead, a marine and his German shepherd scout the dense foliage to avoid a potential ambush. At the ready, the Marine Raider holds his Browning Automatic Rifle close to his chest while keeping an eye out for snipers hidden in the trees. The panel behind the three men serves to provide a visual context of place with additional Raiders visible through the vegetation. The work embodies the Marine Raiders working together with conviction, cooperation, and commitment to succeed in their mission.

C. W. Lonsdale,
Founder and Headmaster

Christopher Windley Lonsdale's early vision for a boy’s preparatory school burgeoned into a world class co-ed boarding institution, currently celebrating its centennial. Sculpted using a combination of living models and old photographs of Lonsdale, this founder's statue stands as a welcome to students, faculty, and visitors to the beautiful Shawnigan Lake School campus on Vancouver Island, B.C., Canada. The first headmaster was forever fond of his loyal, pure-bred dogs. To achieve historical accuracy, the artist consulted experts on the nuances of period-specific German shepherd anatomy.

The Guardian

Raphael the Archangel is the figure whom history has bestowed the title “The Guardian Angel.” His story is written in the book of Tobit (Latin Vulgate) where the Archangel protects Tobit, the son, on his journey while concealing his own identity. He later reveals himself to Tobit as an Angel sent to help them and heals Tobit's father, Tobias from blindness. Raphael has since become the patron of travelers, the blind, nurses, physicians, and medical workers.
