The eldest of two sisters lights her Japanese lantern at twilight while the younger adoringly awaits her turn. The qualities of color, light, and relationship found in this sculpture were inspired by the short story, The Grasshopper and the Bell Cricket by Yasunari Kawabata and the famous painting by John Singer Sargent, Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose.

“Oh, it's not a Grasshopper, it's a Bell Cricket!" The girl's eyes shone as she looked at the small brown insect" - Kawabata

The girls are two real life sisters, Charlotte and Vivian who spend all summer climbing trees and playing fairy in Little Compton, Rhode Island because that's what you do when you've grown up reading Narnia, Harry Potter, and the Lord of the Rings.
